A new study shows that support from the school principal is necessary for the success of social-emotional learning programs. The March 2003 issue of Prevention Science shows results (gathered by Chi-Ming Kam, Mark Greenburg, and Carla T Walls)on the success of a school-based prevention program in high-risk elementary schools. The results dramatically show that the programs reduce problem behavoirs and aggression, and increase social-emotional competence only when the principal's support and the level of program implementation are rated "high". When implementation levels are rated as "high", the positive effect on children doubles with strong support from the principal. According to the study, "high principal support" includes seeing the program as a central to the school's mission, supporting the staff, displaying program materials in the office, collaborating, and helping the program coordinator become part of the school culture.
