Top 10 Things To Do |
|
1. Tell children what
to do
Principle: What you focus on, you get
more of.
Application: Instead of saying, "No pushing,
you know better than to push your brother,
pushing is not nice," say, "When you want
your brother to move say, 'Move please.'
Tell him now." Focus on what you want
your children to do!

Teacher Tip of the Month |
|
Here is a quick tip for teachers who are
working with young children: I noticed
when teaching how to be a S.T.A.R. (Stop,
Take a deep breath, And Relax), they really
did not understand what "relax" meant.
Now we play the "Popsicle Game" to help
them experience and understand what it
means to relax. ... |

What do I do when a child comes running
saying, "He took my pencil!" or "She went
in my room without permission!"
Use this type of conflict moment as an
opportunity to teach children how to respond
to a situation, rather than offering only
punishment. Teaching children how to respond
is the cornerstone of developing responsibility.
Empower the children to assertively stand
up to children who intrude upon their
personal space or property. When a child
comes to you saying, "Sam took my pencil,"
your first response is to ask, "Did you
like it?" ... |

Heart-Shaped Glasses to See the Best
in Others
A great activity to accompany Shubert
Sees The Best ! These heart-shaped
glasses help to make the concept of
"seeing the best in others" more concrete
in young minds. Before reading Shubert
Sees the Best, print the PDF template
(below) on legal-sized paper. (Older
children can cut the glasses out themselves,
but you may want to precut the glasses
for younger children.) After reading
Shubert Sees the Best, present each
child with his/her own pair of glasses.
Then everyone enjoys coloring and decorating
their own pair of heart-shaped glasses
just like Shubert's! Once decorated,
put the glasses on and have a class
or family meeting to talk about what
it means to see the best in others.
No time for all the photocopying and
cutting? Purchase heavy-weight precut
heart-shaped glasses here.

| On Top of My Brainstem (song lyrics) |
|
On top of my brainstem all nestled in grey
Just under my cortex my limbic will stay
Unconscious and verbal I can act like a fool
Without my cortex to help me stay cool
If I pound on the table or roll on the floor
You know that my brainstem can't take anymore
So let me breathe deeply let the oxygen flow
On up to my cortex so that I won't blow
*sing to the tune of: On top of ole Smokey |

Invite children to "Breathe with me..."
Allow time for each child to have a turn
to hold and explore in a small group.
Place in "Safe Place" for children to
use and manipulate while actively calming
and relaxing! More
