Conscious Discipline® (Empowering Teachers)

Conscious Discipline® is a comprehensive emotional intelligence and classroom management program consisting of Brain Smart® strategies for responding rather than reacting to live events.  The program is consciously designed to:

  1. Empower adults by changing their relationship and response to conflict.
  2. Increase the emotional intelligence of adults first, so they in turn may facilitate development of social and emotional skills in children.
  3. Creating a "School Family" where all children belong and contribute.
  4. Optimize brain development to enhance and increase academic achievement.

The following Conscious Discipline® options are Full Day workshops and are presented in the order your school, district or agency would begin the process:

Conscious Discipline® 1: Creating Safe Brain Smart® Classrooms

Learn Conscious Discipline® brain model that will help you not only maintain self-control but teach it to all children, even those with special needs. In this workshop you will not only learn how to positively discipline children but literally change their brain chemistry in the process. This yields lasting changes in behavior, not temporary fixes. Great for parents and teachers. In this workshop you will learn:

  • How the brain learns to self-regulate.
  • How to literally "wire" children for self-control.
  • How to move past your own "triggers" or hot buttons.
  • How to create and implement a safe place in the classroom.
  • How to create a safe keepers ritual.
  • How to create effective routines that eliminate the majority of discipline problems.
  • How to base your classroom on safety and use the language of safety.
  • How to start the day the Brain Smart® way.

This workshop is constantly changing as we learn more about brain development and brain compatible educational strategies.   (Full Day)

Conscious Discipline® 2: Building the School Family & Creating Positive School Climates

A positive school climate is a prerequisite for developmentally appropriate discipline strategies.  Children are motivated to behave through healthy relationships or through awards (stars, stickers, point system). Healthy relationships teach children to value each other, while rewards teach children to value material things. In this very interactive workshop you will learn:

  • How to build the School Family using rituals, literature, activities, and music, and the physical classroom environment.
  • How to help challenging children join the School Family and develop the motivation and desire to be cooperative.
  • The power of the School Family to support academic success.
  • How to use the School Family as the basis of your classroom management system.
  • How to transform hurtful interactions into helpful communication skills.
  • How to set up jobs for every child in your classroom that enhance self-esteem, learning and cooperation.
  • How to design your environment to met the social and emotional needs of all children.

This workshop is very hands-on and requires space for participants to move.  (Full Day)

Conscious Discipline® 3: Teachers Taking Back Their Power

This presentation will assist teachers in learning:

  • How we unconsciously give our power away to students creating competitive classrooms and perpetuating the behaviors of victims and bullies.
  • How to implement a bully prevention program.
  • How to empower the victims to use their "Big Voice".
  • How to take back our power and deal with the 5 levels of defiance to prevent power struggles.
  • How to help ADHD, ADD, Oppositional Disorder children listen and learn.
  • How to implement a time machine.

The skills learned in this workshop are invaluable in assisting teachers to decrease discipline time in the classroom.   (Full Day)

Conscious Discipline® 4: Guiding the Most Challenging Children

Almost every classroom has at least one child who does not respond to any form of guidance. These children use all of our time and energy, rendering teaching virtually impossible. This workshop provides participants with the tools necessary to identify, meet and manage our most difficult children. In this workshop you will learn:

  • How to create one-on-onetime with difficult children without disrupting or changing the daily schedule or neglecting the other children.
  • How to invest three minutes a day to meet the needs of these children and plant the seeds of intrinsic motivation so children will choose to change.
  • How to transform the constant demanding and controlling behaviors of these children into active engagement with, information, other children, and the teacher.
  • How to implement class meetings and use effective consequences.

Aggression workshop is a helpful prerequisite.  (Full Day)

Conscious Discipline® for Parents

All Conscious Discipline® workshops can be done for parents. They are modified for your specific parent group needs and time allotment.

NEW!   Loving Guidance: Setting Limits Without Guilt

We walk a fine line when we rely on fear to discipline our children.  We constantly ask ourselves, "Am I being too strict or have I been too permissive?"  We feel guilty either way, and so we spend our time managing our guilt instead of managing our children. In this workshop you will learn:

  • How to shift from fear to love-the secret to being firm and fair.
  • How to help your children be successful with chores, homework, bedtime and more.
  • How to use the "Four Power" to put you back in charge and empower your children.
  • How to deal with "I don't care" and "You cant make me".
  • How to build your child's character through daily conflicts.

The skills learned in this workshop will create more peaceful, harmonious relationships with our children.

For Parents and Teachers. (Minimum 2 Hours)

NEW!   Effective Consequences: Learning From Your Mistakes Without Having to Pay or Suffer

Everyone has experienced the consequence of their actions. Many of us have made choices that were self-destructive. Some consequences we learn from and some consequences we tend to repeat over and over again. This presentation, using brain based information, helps us to understand how to create effective consequences that promote learning in students and avoids the repetition pitfalls so commonly seen. Specifically, learn how to utlize the most powerful consequence in your school or classroom known at this time. (Full Day)

Creating Problem Solving Classrooms
Replace control with connection and domination with structure in your classroom today! In this workshop you will learn:
  • to let go of old beliefs based on controlling children by using rewards and punishments
  • move into a paradigm of teaching children how to behave
  • to release reliance on fear as the motivator of change
  • shift to relying on love for one another
  • the key ingredient for successful problem solving classrooms, the adult and child responsibilities needed to make it work
  • the five essential steps in teaching positive behavior

These are just a few new ways of learning how to pivot to different types of behaviors.

Presentation Length: Full Day

  • how to assess and manage your own "emotional brain" as well as help foster emotional intelligence in your students
  • the underlying physiology behind impulsiveness, distraction, and aggression, PLUS what to do about it
  • how you can not only positively discipline children but literally change their brain chemistry in the process. This yields lasting changes in behavior, not temporary fixes
  • the "anatomy" of any discipline encounter
  • how children's brains develop and what you can do to boost their brain potential
  • the three skills of Brain Smart® Discipline. These basic skills are essential for maintaining and regaining self-control
  • how to create "encouraging" environments based on inclusion, cooperation and safety, by using the language of safety

This workshop is constantly changing as we learn more about brain development and brain compatible educational strategies.

Presentation Length: Full Day

The Seven Basic Skills of Discipline

Teachers and parents are being asked to guide children's social and emotional development without having the skills to do the job. Imagine trying to play basketball without knowing how to dribble. Any subject has basic skills. The same is true for discipline. This workshop will teach the "Seven Basic Skills of Discipline: How and When to Use Them." Each discipline skill evolves from one of Seven Powers for Self Control. The self-control skills empower adults. The discipline skills empower children. The result is moment-by-moment character development of both adults and children! Once adults have the basics skills, knowing what to do in each discipline encounter is guaranteed. For years we have empowered children. Now it is time to empower teachers and adults.
