View statistical
research results on the effectiveness of the Conscious Discipline®
program.
In 1996,
when Bessey Creek opened, the community and school
, together, adopted the Josephson's Institute's
Character Counts! Program. The new principal
of our school began the search for a researched-based
social skills program which would enable us to teach
the pillars more effectively. In 2002-2003
our "School Family" began teaching the
six pillars among our children with emotional intelligence
skills using Dr. Becky Bailey's Conscious Discipline®Program. By using daily conflicts to teach
character development, social skills, conflict resolution
and self control, teachers are able to integrate
social, emotional and academic learning into one
seamless curriculum. Parents are in the second
year of spearheading Conscious Discipline® parent
training workshops, teachers are attending training,
and the children are learning how to make choices
to stay safe, become connected and solve problems.
The 2002-2003 Climate survey showed that 95% of
parents feel that "the total school community
works together to help students achieve," and
in the first 3 months of the 2003-2004 school
year discipline referrals are down by 33%!
Bessey Creek is one of 17 schools in the Nation selected
as a semi-finalist in the Character Education Partnership's
National Schools of Character Award Program.

"Just had to share
this with you. The Kindergartner who, in the Fall hit, kicked,
spit at me (and others), who challenged us all to dig deep, run fast
and think lots-this boy today brought me in a picture of many, many
stars. He had put as many on the paper as he could find space.
I admired it and thanked him, and then he whispered to me so nobody
else could hear, "Its for you to use for kids who don't understand
being a STAR"...(and then, very solemnly). "You know, some
people take a long, long time to understand." The picture
goes into my memory box and my heart will stay warm for a long time.
He finally found the feeling of self control.
Thank you."

"Something I wanted to share with you after attending your Moline workshop. I have, for the past year been in a bit of a professional slump and have been thinking that this would be my last year. Feeling defeated, your workshop was a last-ditch effort on my part to rekindle the passion that I have had for my career for the past 30 years.
Consider me rekindled! I was a sponge at the workshop, literally needing to hear your message. You gave me a whole new set of tools...watch out staff, here I come. Up until this year, I had felt that working with young children was what I was put on this earth to do. It has been a sad year for me, for the first time feeling inadequate. I can only say thank you... I am breathing again. I plan to see you this summer in Florida.
Most sincerely, "

"I had purchased violence
prevention curriculum for the preschool at the Center for the Homeless
before, but it didn't get to the root of the problem and truly prevent
violence. Now I know why. If the children are not feeling safe, no
curriculum will help change their behavior and address their deeper
needs. Becky's material has made us much more effective in what we
are seeking to do - which is to connect with every child and lay the
groundwork of breaking the cycle of homelessness. We finally have
the exact and most effective responses to violence. We now have children
whose behavior had flipped 180-degrees. Originally I had a "quiet
room" set up for children who were out of control. That room is currently
being used for storage space! Thank you for your work."

"I have been working with a boy at my church who was born addicted to
crack cocaine. He has been attending children's choir and having violent
outbursts to both teachers and students. I shadowed him for two weeks,
and then made recommendations. I gave the teachers the I Love You Rituals
book and showed them how to do three rituals. They have been using them
and it's working! If they notice he seems off task or is getting upset,
one of the teachers will pull him aside and do a ritual together. If
he runs out of the class, they stop him in the hall and do a ritual.
When he is refocused and calm, he returns to the classroom. Thanks so
much for writing that book."

"Nelson started first grade today and has pretty successfully been the
poster child for "anger is fear in disguise." The other night we did
some journaling about his feelings. He immediately wrote that he was
"SKARD." We continued to journal about managing the fear and he then
laid back in my arms, closed his eyes, described where and what the
feeling looked like, and continued to breathe until the feeling disappeared.
I held him and whispered how it would work out. I was struck by the
difference in his experience and my experiences as a child 40 years
ago. I could honestly feel, on a cellular level, the shift in attitude.
DNA in motion, instead of baggage. When he got out of the car today
for his first day of first grade, while other mothers were weeping,
I had a real sense of pride that I have given Nelson a strong beginning.
I know that while Nelson is taking these independent steps, he has some
real tools in his toolbox. Thanks to Dr. Bailey's teachings and my application,
Nelson will soar...and when he doesn't, he knows he has a safe place
to rest. Thank you from the bottom of my heart."

"This
was an awesome conference. I love the fact that
it was interactive. I look forward to implementing as
much of this in my center as possible."

"Absolutely
the best education workshop I have attended in 20 years
in the teaching profession. Practical help that
I can use immediately in my school counseling program.
Thank you!"
